Nestled on Dolafon Road in the heart of Newtown, the Waggon and Horses offers a quintessentially British dining experience that perfectly balances classic comfort with refined flavors. This charming restaurant is renowned for its hearty, expertly crafted dishes, centered on quality local ingredients and culinary traditions that speak of warmth and homeliness.
At the core of Waggon and Horses’ menu is its signature Slow Braised Celtic Pride Beef, served atop a velvety leek mash, accompanied by a golden Yorkshire pudding and drenched in a rich, savory gravy. Each bite bursts with deep, satisfying flavors that have been lovingly slow-cooked to tender perfection—comfort food that feels like a warm embrace. Beyond the star beef dish, guests can indulge in a broad spectrum of choices, from a succulent Beef Burger enhanced by a selection of bold red pepper and white wine sauces, to lighter starters like the robust Prawn and Smoked Salmon Cocktail or the creamy Garlic Butter Button Mushrooms perched on crostini. Vegetarians will appreciate the Wild Mushroom and Stilton Ravioli, its earthiness elevated by a delicate cream sauce and wilted greens.
The thoughtfully curated dessert selection is nothing short of irresistible. The Sticky Toffee Pudding, smothered in caramel sauce and paired with vanilla ice cream, has earned raves as the “best sticky toffee pudding ever,” while the creamy Vanilla Panna Cotta with blueberry and strawberry compote adds a fresh, fruity finish to a meal. For those seeking something lighter yet decadent, the Lemon Posset with meringue and sorbet balances tart and sweet with finesse.
The welcoming atmosphere at Waggon and Horses enriches the entire experience. The cozy, homely setting invites diners to relax and savor every moment, whether it's a bustling Sunday lunch or a quiet midweek indulgence. Many guests delight in the friendly, attentive staff who go above and beyond to make everyone feel at ease—families with children and even four-legged friends are warmly embraced, contributing to a true sense of community.
Customer feedback speaks volumes about the consistent quality and spirited hospitality. Regulars like Linda Stead praise the restaurant for “knocking Sunday lunch out of the park” with perfectly prepared roast beef and lamb shank, while Matt Collett highlights not only the impeccably seasoned tomato and red onion soup but also the genuine friendliness of the staff and the excellent value. Clare Ann’s experience capturing the pub’s dog-friendly charm and attentive service complements Emma Williams’ enthusiastic endorsement of the “amazing” food, atmosphere, and standout desserts.
For anyone exploring Newtown or seeking a memorable dining experience steeped in Welsh charm and culinary expertise, Waggon and Horses stands out as a true gem. It’s a place where quality ingredients meet heartfelt cooking, and where every meal feels like a special occasion shared with friends and family.

The Waggon & Horse kindly squeezed us in for Sunday lunch, and we’re so glad they did. We started with the Tomato & Red Onion Soup topped with fresh croutons, which was full of flavour and beautifully presented. For our mains, we enjoyed the Roast Beef and the Lamb Shank, both absolutely outstanding. We often go out for Sunday lunch, but this truly knocked it out of the park. Every dish was simply delicious. The staff were warm, attentive, and made us feel very well looked after. A fantastic experience all round. If we lived closer we would be regulars!
Excellent. Booked a meal for a sunday and had the starter, which was tomato and red onion soup, which was amazing, followed by roast beef dinner, which was also amazing. Can't fault it at all. Reasonably priced, lovely service, friendly staff, and the food was spot on. So yes, I definitely recommend this, and they really deserve praise. Book early, though, as they are very busy to guarantee a table and time.
We popped in for Saturday lunch and had an excellent time. The staff went above and beyond during our visit, the food was amazing as were the drinks. The pub is dog friendly and he enjoyed meeting their 2 dogs. If we’re in this part of the world again we will be revisiting!
Food, service and atmosphere all amazing. Delicious sunday lunch, best had out in a very long time. Staff couldnt do enough for us and brilliant with children. Cosy atmosphere in pub. Fantastic all round. Best sticky toffee pudding ever!!
This was one of the best meals I've had all year. We were a group of 9, hungry from walking on the mountains and we were fed delicious food by friendly staff in a cosy, homely setting. Perfect! Thank you everyone at Waggon & Horses
Lovely pub with restaurant area in the back. The staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcomed. Food was delicious. Would definitely come back!
We enjoyed a lovely meal, sat comfortably with our dogs. The food was excellent and delicious, nice and hot on arrival to our table. The lamb shank was soft and well cooked, the roast beef nice and tender, plus the vegetables were plentiful and tasty. Deserts were also tasty and nicely proportioned.
Everything about this amazing pub was 5* from the moment we walked in. Friendly welcoming atmosphere and dog friendly too. With 2 of their own doggies roaming around, both friendly and well behaved! Was a huge plus for us. A gorgeous garden we choose to sit in the comfy seating pergola area. The food was out of the question incredible. Fresh and even catered off the menu for my son. Certainly deserve there award winning title. We are from Cambridgeshire and this is without a doubt the best pub we have ever been in. Thank you so much for such wonderful and genuine hospitality
